Somali Part-time Interpreter, Refugee Legal Assistance Program**

Project Description: Refugee Legal Aid Program

The Refugee Legal Aid Program (RLAP) provides advice and representation to refugees seeking recognition by UNHCR through refugee status determination procedures in Egypt and assists refugees in accessing resettlement to safe third countries. RLAP is seeking full time Hourly Interpreter to assist RLAP and StARS Psychosocial (PS) program with client appointments and communication.

Role

Under the supervision of the RLAP Interpreter Coordinator and the Director of RLAP, the Hourly Interpreter will be responsible for supporting the interpretation and translation work for RLAP and PS Program. This includes: Interpretation and written translation; scheduling of client appointments; and interpreting or covering for Screening and Intake Officers; and completing client surveys and questionnaires as needed.

Responsibilities

All duties are carried out under the supervision of the RLAP Interpreter Coordinator.

Technical

● Provide interpretation, maintaining confidentiality and impartiality.

● Maintain professional confidentiality regarding financial and personnel records.

● Communicate cooperatively and effectively with legal advisors, caseworkers, and other Interpreters.

● Carry out responsibilities in a timely and professional manner.

● Participate in skills training and improvement activities at request of Interpreter Coordinator.

● Keep Interpreter Coordinator informed of vacation, sick and personal leave.

● Participate in monthly Interpreters meetings and annual performance evaluation.

● Provide written translation, as requested, in a timely manner.

● Support the Interpreter Coordinator in conducting regular calls to clients for scheduling of appointments at StARS different premisses.

● Undergo Screening and Intake Officer training in order to provide coverage as needed.

● Maintain good working knowledge of UNHCR policies and procedures.

● Adhere to the StARS Staff Handbook, and the StARS Code of Conduct.

Programmatic

● To build and maintain strong relationships with different StARS Programs.

● To receive regular feedback of interpretation as reported by RLAP and PS staff and identify training needs.

● To engage proactively in promoting self-care among other part time interpreters.

● To attend and contribute to interpreters meetings and other staff meetings and trainings as required.

● To be online by using Viber application where daily schedule is sent at the end of each working day and interpreters needs to reply with their confirmation by 9pm, so the Interpreters Coordinator able to secure interpreters for daily requests and demands.

Communication/Reporting

● To promote information-sharing within RLAP and StARS on all issues affecting the populations we serve.

Qualifications & Experience

● The ideal candidate will be highly organized, energetic, articulate, and comfortable interacting with diverse segments of society

● Ability to assess and respond to emergency situations calmly and quickly.

Essential qualifications:

● English being the official language of UNHCR Cairo and StARS, the Senior Interpreter must be fluent in oral and written English.

● Fluency in oral and written Somali is required for this position.

● Fluency in Arabic and any other refugees’ languages is a plus.

● Academic degree or certification in education related to Translation and Interpretation is encouraged.

● Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

● A demonstrated commitment to and sensitivity toward vulnerable or displaced people.

● Organization skills and the ability to manage multiple competing tasks simultaneously.

● A proven ability to work in a team, to cooperate and communicate effectively with peers and supervisor. Ability to think creatively, problem solve, and work well independently.

● Proven skills in MS Office and Google Drive.

● Maturity and discretion, ability to work with and maintain confidential information.

● A positive attitude and sensitive manner when dealing with challenging scenarios.

● Ability to exercise sound judgment, well organized, self-motivated, and reliable.

Hours: Hourly, as determined by Interpreter Coordinator,based on the Interpreters booking requests and demands through the week (Sunday – Thursday).

Supervised by: RLAP Interpreter Coordinator

Salary: 45 L.E per hour and 80 L.E per page of a translated document.
