Founded in 1979, St Andrew’s Refugee Services (StARS) is a refugee service provider in central Cairo that works to enhance the quality of life for refugees and vulnerable migrants through four programs: adult and children’s education, legal, and psychosocial services. Program Overview: Syrian Community Education
The Syrian Community Education program is an initiative aimed at engaging Syrians in and around Cairo with English language tuition. The classes take place in four centres in downtown Cairo, 6thof October City, and Al-Obour City. There are around 150 registered students taught by the Syrian Community Education Teacher and two part-time teachers.
Role
The Syrian Community Teacher will be in charge of managing, developing, and teaching in venues at StARS itself as well as with our Syrian community partners in areas across Cairo. The teacher will be responsible for the delivery of quality English tuition to Syrians of a variety of ability levels. This is an exciting opportunity both for teaching skills and for gaining critical insights into the Syrian community here in Cairo through the lens of education in what is the only program of its kind in Cairo.
Responsibilities
All duties are carried out under the supervision of the Coordinator of the Adult Education Program and the Coordinator for Syrian Community Outreach.
Teaching
To advertise, hold, and mark placement tests at each of the program's venues.
To determine class composition based on placement test results and students who previously participated.
To teach up to 15 hours a week in different locations in and around Cairo.
To teach English language to students across a variety of ability levels, including a specializedEnglish literature for Syrian community teachers.
To prepare and submit lesson plans to the Coordinator of the Adult Education Program before each class.
To use the provided texts and materials to prepare students for a final exams and to hold them at the end of each term
To pay attention to the learning needs of students, respond to them on the individual level and to take them into consideration when developing the program.
Staff and Supervision
To recruit, train, supervise, and support teachers for the Syrian Community Education program to ensure the continued delivery of quality English classes and the efficient and effective running of the program.
To organise team meetings and regular supervision sessions with teachers.
To ensure all teachers maintain accurate attendance records of their students.
To ensure all teachers carry out tasks in accordance with StARS policies and procedures and its Code of Conduct.
To regularly meet with the part-time teachers of the program to provide them with advice and support and address any issues and to do an annual performance appraisal with the two part-time teachers.
Networking
To maintain existing and develop new relationships with Syrian community partners in Al-Obour City and 6th of October City to ensure the smooth running of classes in those venues.
To keep in close contact with actors in the community to identify further opportunities for the development of the Syrian Community Education program and other StARS programs.
To develop a broad working knowledge of the services that StARS offers in order to respond to needs in the Syrian community as and when they arise, which may include sending internal referrals for individuals seeking assistance from other programs at StARS.
Administration
To attend coordination meetings, and other internal meetings as appropriate.
To provide quarterly statistics to the Director of Education relating to the activity of the program.
To register students and handle registration fees after placement tests.
To submit registration forms to the Coordinator of the Adult Education Program at the start of each term.
To ensure that clear and accurate records are kept of all students and to have this data available on internal databases.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, have a passion for teaching, and knowledge of the educational needs of vulnerable people and in particular have the following qualifications and experiences:
Fluency in English, with skills in spoken Arabic
English teaching experience with a variety of learners and ages
A teaching qualification (like CELTA or TEFL) is an advantage
Experience working with migrants or refugees
Experience working in international development
Experience managing large programs and delivering successful outcomes from them
Responsible handling large amounts of money
Ability to motivate and lead a group of people
Ability to use good interpersonal skills to network effectively both inside and outside the place of work
Punctual and reliable
A positive attitude and collaborative approach to dealing with students and staff
Hours: The Syrian Community Teacher will be expected to generally work from Sunday to Thursday between the hours of 11am and 7pm. Additional work is sometimes necessary outside of these hours.
The coordinator will teach in Downtown Cairo, as well as in various Syrian community centres in Greater Cairo.
Salary: EGP 3,000 to EGP 3,500 depending on experience and upon completion of a three-months probation period (plus EGP 100 monthly medical allowance and EGP 50 monthly pension contribution).
